November 15, 2014

Wow.  I have seriously neglected this blog.  In my defense, it's partly because I have gone back to school.  Yes, I am a 39 year old college junior.  It sounds a bit ridiculous, especially considering that two of my children are also college students.  My oldest is almost halfway through his senior year and my middle child is nearly halfway through his very first semester.  Between the three of us, we represent 3 different schools.  I think I might be a little bit crazy for taking this on, but then again, I was probably a little crazy all along.

Outside my window...
it is cold and cloudy.  The yard is full of leaves because there is no point messing with them until the trees are bare and the neighbors start mulching/bagging there's too.  There's a decent chance for snow tomorrow, which I'm not especially happy about.  I don't like winter much anyway and this is just too early.

I am thinking...
way too much these days and about the wrong things.  I will be reading one of my textbooks and realize that while my eyes are moving over the page, I'm mentally making a menu or a grocery list...or more likely, obsessing over something that I have no control over.

I am thankful...
for my husband's new job and the benefits that come with it.

In the kitchen...
there is ground beef thawing for dinner.  I'm not sure what I will make with it yet...maybe goulash?  Or tostadas?

I am wearing...
gray sweatpants, black long sleeve t shirt, fuzzy Doctor Who socks.

I am creating...
My daughter and I are planning a themed Christmas tree this year.  We are going to make felt ornaments representing our favorite tv shows, movies, and video games and cover the tree in them.  Doctor Who, Stargate, Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Minecraft, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Nightmare Before Christmas, Game of Thrones, etc.  The weeping angel tree topper that I ordered from Think Geek should be here any day now.

I am going...
mostly just to the grocery store, library, and campus these days.

I am wondering...
if anyone will be disappointed if I take store bought deserts to Thanksgiving at my brother's house.  I usually make homemade but...

I am reading...
Textbooks.  So. Many. Textbooks.  There's just no time for anything else.

I am hoping...
for decent grades.

I am looking forward to...
Christmas break.  I have nearly a month off between semesters.

I am learning...
a lot of new things.  And if I'm completely honest, I think I'm learning some things that I've learned before and forgotten.

Around the house...
things are actually no worse than usual.  I was afraid the housework would suffer, but when I'm procrastinating on homework, I do housework and when I'm procrastinating on housework I do homework.  I'm always procrastinating on something , so most everything gets done.

I am pondering...
another cup of coffee.   I usually stick to a firm limit of 2 cups a day, but it's just so tempting.  Maybe I'll have a chai instead.

A favorite quote for today...
"Quiet people have the loudest minds."  --Stephen Hawking

One of my favorite things...
The new fleece lined leggings that I bought at Walgreens this week.  They are so warm and soft and are perfect for under jeans or a skirt.  For once, "one size fits most" was not a lie.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Homework, quiz, test, research project, housework...rinse and repeat.

A peek into my day...
This is not actually my's a stock photo representation of my day because finding the cord to my phone is another one of those things that ain't nobody got time for.

January 17, 2014

Outside my window... It's pitch black and cold.  Not unexpected for 8:00 at night in January.

I am thinking... About trying to cut back on the amount I use my clothes dryer.  It's getting up there in years and is starting to make a squeaky sound sometimes.  I think if I start hanging most of our clothes to dry it might add some time to it's life and cut back on my electric bill.

I am thankful... That there is no rain, snow or ice today.  I'm so very tired of Winter.

In the kitchen... Lots of goodies :)  I turned a rotisserie chicken into chicken quesadillas for dinner.  I then used the bones and scraps of that chicken plus the carcass of the last one (I stored it in the freezer) to make a couple of quarts of chicken stock.  Since someone is constantly sick with a cold around here that should make a couple of nice batches of chicken soup.  I also threw together a pan of banana and white chocolate chip scones.  I've never made these before, but I combined my favorite easy scone recipe and my best banana bread recipe and I have high hopes for it.  It smells great, anyway.

I am wearing... Gray sweatpants and a pink t shirt that reads, "I'm not mean. I just don't like you." lol

I am creating... A delicious smelling house. :)

I am going... To our library's used book sale tomorrow.  I think.

I am wondering... Where my grandparents are.  They travel full time and while they check in at least once a week...I'm not precisely sure where they are tonight.  Somewhere along the Gulf Coast, but beyond that...I'm not sure.

I am reading... Not nearly enough lately.  My attention span is pretty much that of a fly this time of year.  I have a whole stack of magazines that I need to read through and recycle before they completely overtake my coffee table.

I am hoping... For an early Spring.

I am looking forward to... Valentine's Day.

I am learning... To pace myself so I will stop hurting my bad back.

Around the house... Candles.  Candles and more candles.  I received several as Christmas presents and I just love them.

I am pondering... How difficult it would be to learn to carve wooden spoons by hand.  I saw a blog post on it earlier today and I just can't get it out of my mind.

A favorite quote for today... "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."  --Edgar Allan Poe
This is actually one of my all time favorite quotes.  It seemed appropriate since Poe's birthday is in just 2 days.

One of my favorite things... Tea.  Earl Grey.  Hot.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Gather up books to donate to the library, start pricing new tires for my car, drop a long overdue package at the post office.

A peek into my day... Yes.  That is a (faux) Lego Stargate.  Yes.  It is set up with my Christmas village.  That's just how we roll in this house.

2013 End of Year Review

What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I think that I stayed in a hotel all alone for the first time. I also think that I shot a bb gun for the first time. It's possible that I had done these things before and forgotten (especially the bb gun) but I don't think so. I know that I went to my very first comic book convention this past spring. That was cool.

Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I sort of kept my resolutions. I did start a blog, but I did not update it anywhere near 3 times a week. I don't think I'm going to make any new ones this year.

Did anyone close to you give birth?

Did anyone close to you die?
No. Thank goodness. The previous year was quite enough of that.

What countries did you visit?

What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013.
I'm not sure what to put here...I mean, a fat bank account would be nice, but mostly, I am content.

What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Pfffttt...I couldn't remember a specific date if my life depended on it.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Buying a new to us truck with cash. Well, a check.

What was your biggest failure?
Trying to work my way through the health insurance system. I don't know if it was my failure or theirs but it was definitely a big fat FAIL. I'll get it sorted sooner or later, though.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
A back injury that put me out flat for 6 weeks. It's still not perfect and probably never will be, but if I'm careful...I can manage.

What was the best thing you bought?
Either the aforementioned truck or my laptop. Although I can't quite remember if I bought the computer in Dec or 2012 or Jan of 2013. lol

Whose behavior merited praise?
I'm pretty proud of my kids. The oldest got straight A's this last semester at Berea College and my younger son graduated from high school. My daughter has finally started to enjoy reading and writing and has greatly improved this past year.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
So many retailers. Opening on Thanksgiving...honestly!

Where did most of your money go?
Groceries, utilities, a truck, and a great vacation.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Spending a whole week alone with my husband. A night in the mountains, 5 nights in Myrtle Beach and then a night in Berea on the way home. It was awesome.

What song will always remind you of 2013?
I never know new music, but I discovered these Vintage Cafe albums on Spotify this year and I've been loving them.

Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?

thinner or fatter?
Thinner. At my last checkup I was down another 15 pounds from my 2012 physical.

richer or poorer?
Same more or less

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spending time in the sun. I'm really missing it now.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying. I'm one big ball of anxiety and worry and it's pointless.

How did you be spend Christmas?
Christmas Eve with the inlaws and Christmas day with my family.

Did you fall in love in 2013?
More with my husband every day.

How many one night stands?
No. God lord, no. lol

What was your favorite TV program?
My new favorite was Sleepy Hollow. My rediscovered favorite was Stargate:Atlantis.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year
Yes. There are 2 new people on my list unfortunately and they both wound up on there by messing with my family.

What was the best book you read?
The Stargate: Atlantis Legacy series. Love them.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Vintage Cafe. Lounge and Jazz covers. Some are hilarious and some are awesome but they are all super relaxing to me.

What did you want and get?
A fabulous week at the beach with my husband.

What did you want and not get?
To win the lottery. lol

What was your favorite film this year?
Riddick. It was great.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
38 and I don't really remember. Erik and I kind of postponed our birthdays until our vacation and went out a few extra times on that trip for our birthdays and anniversary.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I was pretty satisfied with my year. I can't think of anything more that I needed.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
Hippie Hipster Mommy Chic

What kept you sane?
Internet, vacation, coffee, music, my garden.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Vin Diesel

What political issue stirred you the most?
Ugh. Politics. I'll pass.

Who did you miss?
My son while he was away at school.

Who was the best new person you met?
While serving on the homeschool support group board I got friendly with one of the other members. It's no wonder she turned out to be so awesome....we wound up figuring out that we are distant cousins. LOL

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
"What goes around, comes around. And sometimes you get what comes around... and sometimes you *are* what comes around." -- Jim Butcher (Grave Peril)

Quote a song that sums up your year.
I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

"Well I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down"
